Forests, in addition to contributing directly to the quality of our cognacs, play a vital role in our future: combatting climate change, fertilising soil, preserving biodiversity, they provide many benefits.

With its FOREST DESTINATION programme, Hennessy is committed to regenerating 50,000 hectares of forest in France and around the world by 2030. It is a framework of commitments and initiatives for the benefit of future generations.

Pillars of the programme

Oak and cognac, an intimate link

Our eaux-de-vie gain their aromas and woody colour by ageing in oak barrels. It is this oak and no other that ensures the excellence of our cognac. This is why Hennessy has entered into a sponsorship programme with the ONF (French Forestry Commission) to guarantee the sustainable and rational management of the Braconnne forest. Every year and for 5 years, their teams manage 5 hectares of oak forest. This is enough to meet the annual renewal need of 30,000 barrels, which represents 560 hectares of oak forests.

Forests, a defence against climate change

Forests store CO2 and release oxygen. They nourish fertile soils by producing humus. They are home to 80% of Earth’s biodiversity, providing protection and food for birds, insects and small animals. They also balance our ecosystems, and because they provide 75% of our water, they are vital to life on our planet. In the face of the climate challenge, scientists unanimously agree that preserving and regenerating forests is one of the most accessible and effective solutions to capture carbon, restore ecosystems and safeguard biodiversity. Forests are a defence mechanism that we must safeguard and pass on to future generations.

Passing on forests to future generations

Hennessy has a presence throughout the world. It is therefore only natural that we are committed to forest regeneration programmes in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, China and the USA. In partnership with Reforest’Action, we are committed to regenerating 50,000 hectares of forest via local NGO’s. Forests also provide people with activities and sources of income. To meet this challenge, we have built local programmes that are adapted to the needs of local populations and respectful of local ecosystems and biodiversity. Reforestation, restoration or agroforestry, the projects are adapted to the environment by using species that are specific to the local ecosystem. Forests benefit not only our environment, but also local communities by providing employment and economic development opportunities. This is just the beginning but our destination is clear: the regeneration of forest ecosystems around the world to cultivate the future.
